Introduction

" When all the world is young, lad,
And all the trees are green;
And every goose a swan, lad,
And every lass a queen..."

from The Water-babies by Charles Kingsley

Shyneford? Is it a real place? Of course!
Shyneford was Clive Young's name for Guildford in the late-1960s and early 1970s.
The time of the Guildford Arts Lab, the new University of Surrey,
Merrydown in the Castle grounds, table football in the King's Head,
poetry readings at Boxers, the Millbrook manifesto, and lots of hippy happy times.
Halcyon Days, indeed.
